One of the major difficulties in spoken English is pronunciation. Factors like dialect, environment, and lack of knowledge play a role in distorting the way of pronouncing the word. Here are a few tips to improve English pronunciation which I have often used in my speaking sessions.

Listen to native speakers carefully

Focus on how the native speakers pronounce a word or the words. You can watch English movies, News or simply listen to soft English songs. This would help understand the way people speak a word with other words. It also helps understand the tone of speech and how it is actually spoken in a specific situation.

Understand the use of tongue, palate, and air

The words come out of the mouth mainly because of the use of air. There are various ways to exhale and inhale or otherwise breathe while speaking a word. While doing so, the tongue might strike the palate or rear part of the teeth. Sometimes, lips have a role to play in producing alphabets. Under a good pronunciation trainer, you’d get an idea of how to pronounce a word. Factors like when and where to stress the alphabet in a word and how to release the air to correctly pronounce the word.

Speak the language as much as possible

Speaking English in a non-native language environment often poses difficulties. However, make sure to catch a couple of friends or colleagues and try to use the Basics at first. It is not easy to come to terms without effort. After knowing a few words from a native speaker, jot down some in your personal notebook. Start pronouncing the word in front of the mirror. You will well-understand the use of different facial and mouth parts while speaking any one or two words. If you don’t find any native speaker who can speak to you, try to understand the voice, tone, and movement of facial features by watching TV.

Learn in steps

It is not easy to understand every word while speaking. It is also not easy to pronounce the word correctly despite making efforts. Don’t lose confidence. Try to pronounce the word in steps. Divide the word into letters. Watch the alphabet stressed in the word. Also, make sure the correct way of pronouncing the letters. For instance, the word “paste” is different from the word “pest”. Watch the stress at the end of the first two alphabets.

Record your voice

One of the time-tested techniques to effectively get the word right on the tongue is recording. Use any device to record your voice. Try to read the reading passage three to four times and note the use of pronunciation. While recording, you can find not only the difference in pronouncing a word but the sentences too. The rhythm and intonation for a single or group of words get easily identified.

You can effectively understand the way to get the exact pronunciation of words. The difficulty lies in speaking the word correctly. It doesn’t lie in understanding the spoken word. Once you’re able to understand the correct modulation, there is no way you’d find difficulty in speaking the words or sentences with precise pronunciation. For more click here…
