Are you into speed reading? If so then you should know that it can dramatically decrease how much time you spend reading one book. Speed reading is a technique that is sought after by many, but a lot of people just don’t know how to do it properly. In this article, you will learn some tips that you can use to become a better speed reader. Here’s tip number 1.
1) Don’t stop
Once you’ve got the momentum going when reading, don’t stop. You want to complete the entire section before stopping and rereading any passages. This will get you into the habit of building up your confidence for reading comprehension. After you have finished reading all of the text, go back and reread any sections that you feel kind of weak on. Here’s another tip.
2) Use a highlighter
You want to use a yellow highlighter to mark through any of the text that you didn’t understand. If there’s a section where you thought it summarized the entire page, highlight this section also. This will get you into the habit of understanding the main idea of the text.
3) Write summaries
Writing short summaries will allow you to better understand what you just read. Your chapter summaries should be around 2-3 sentences long and should be reviewed after you’ve finished reading the text. Here’s another tip.
4) Skip the unimportant parts
There are times where you can tell whether a section is unimportant or not. You want to skip the sections that are unimportant and try to focus on the parts that seem relevant. Usually, the most important parts of the chapter consist of the title and the first paragraph of the chapter. It’s your goal to read these sections thoroughly so that you can get the gist of the passage.
5) Read the last paragraph of the chapter
This usually sums the entire chapter up. It’s your goal to read this section in addition to the first paragraph in order to get a handle of what you just read. It will be in your best interest also to make notes of what you just read as these will help to summarize the main points of the chapter.
6) Keep a paper and pen on you
Keeping a pen and paper on you when reading is important for jotting down important parts of the text. Use this in conjunction with a highlighter to underline and highlight sections that you deem relevant.
